Why Visit DR Congo

Where to go

Top locations

The Democratic Republic of Congo's national parks are among the most biologically significant protected areas on the surface of the planet and among the least visited. That combination of extraordinary richness and genuine remoteness is precisely what makes them so compelling for the traveller who wants something beyond the ordinary safari circuit. Virunga  Africa's oldest national park anchors the east with its mountain gorillas, active volcanoes, and staggering biodiversity. Salonga, deep in the heart of the Congo Basin, is the largest tropical rainforest national park in Africa and the primary stronghold of the bonobo. Garamba in the north holds some of the last remaining northern white rhinos in recorded history. Kahuzi-Biega protects the world's most important population of Grauer's gorillas. These are not just parks they are planetary treasures, each one a UNESCO World Heritage Site, each one a reminder of what this earth looked like before humanity began its long process of simplification. Visiting them is an act of witness, of wonder, and of profound responsibility.

Seasons & timing

When to go

The DRC straddles the equator, and its sheer geographic size means that no single seasonal description can cover the entire country. The Congo Basin in the centre experiences rain year-round, with two drier periods that ease travel and trekking conditions. The east where most tourist activity is concentrated, around Virunga, Goma, and the Rwenzori Mountains follows a more defined seasonal pattern influenced by its higher altitude and proximity to the East African climate system. As a rule, the drier months offer the most comfortable conditions for gorilla and chimpanzee trekking, volcano ascents, and overland travel between parks. But in a country this vast and this alive, there is always something extraordinary happening, in every season, somewhere.
