National Park
Isalo National Park is among Madagascar’s most beautiful natural attractions with dramatic sandstone landscapes, deep canyons, natural swimming pools, and unique wildlife animals. The Park includes verdant eastern rainforests, towering rock formations, windswept plateaus, hidden oases and palm-lined streams creating an unforgettable landscape that attracts hikers, photographers and nature enthusiasts from around the world.
The Park is situated in the South western part of Madagascar near the town of Ranohira. Isalo National Park is a haven for endemic plants and animals, including several species of lemurs, reptiles, birds and rare succulents. The park's combination of geological wonders, rich biodiversity and cultural significance makes it one of Madagascar's premier ecotourism destinations.
Isalo National Park lies in the Ihorombe Region along Madagascar's famous National Road 7 (RN7) about 700 kilometers southwest of Antananarivo. The park covers more than 81,000 hectares (815 square kilometers) protecting a vast sandstone massif shaped by millions of years of erosion. The Park consists of
Massive sandstone cliffs, Deep canyons, Rocky pinnacles, Open grasslands, Hidden valleys, Palm-fringed streams, Natural swimming pools, Seasonal rivers.
Isalo became one of Madagascar's earliest protected areas when it was designated a national park and is managed by Madagascar National Parks (MNP) playing a crucial role in conserving the island's dry forests, sandstone ecosystems and endemic wildlife.
Isalo National Park consists of dry tropical climate i.e Dry season in the months of April to October, Rainy season in the months of November to March, Average temperatures of 17–25°C with annual rainfall of about 850 mm.
The Park includes flora and fauna species like Lemurs i.e Ring-tailed lemur, Verreaux's sifaka, Red-fronted brown lemur. There are bird species too and these include; Benson's rock thrush, Madagascar kestrel, Madagascar buzzard, Crested drongo, kingfishers and sunbirds. There are also reptiles and amphibians i.e Oustalet's chameleon, Leaf-tailed geckos, Skinks, Boas, Endemic frogs found near streams and pools.
Flora in the park include; Pachypodium ("elephant's foot" plants), Aloe species, Euphorbias, Fire-resistant tapia trees, Pandanus palms, Riparian forests in sheltered canyons.
Isalo National Park can be visited anytime around the year although the best time to visit the park is during the dry season in the months of April to October as the Hiking trails are in good condition, Temperatures are comfortable, Wildlife is easier to spot, Natural pools remain inviting,
