About the Park

MOSI OA TUNYA NATIONAL PARK .

Located just outside the tourist hub of Livingstone Mosi oa Tunya National Park is Zambia’s smallest national park but it carries immense cultural and environmental weight. The name translates to the smoke that thunders which is the local name for Victoria Falls.

The park is divided into two sections the spectacular falls monument itself and a small fenced game park along the Zambezi River. Because the park is free of large predators like lions and leopards it provides a safe and relaxed environment for viewing wildlife. It is home to elephants buffalo giraffes zebras and various antelope species.

Crucially Mosi oa Tunya is the only place in Zambia where visitors can see the highly endangered white rhinoceros. These rhinos are under twenty four hour armed guard by wildlife rangers. Visitors can arrange guided walking safaris to approach these magnificent creatures on foot offering an incredibly powerful up close encounter.

Best time to visit Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park

The best time to visit Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park depends on whether your priority is seeing wildlife, experiencing Victoria Falls at its fullest, or enjoying adventure activities. The Park can be visited anytime around the year although the best time to visit is during the months of May to August and
September and October.

How to get to Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park

Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park can be accessed using Air and Road transport that are preferred by the travelers.

By Air

Travelers to the park can use Air as they fly into Harry Mwanga Nkumbula International Airport where they leave from to the park. The airport is about 10–15 km (15–20 minutes by road) from the park entrance. Regular domestic flights from Lusaka and international connections from destinations such as Johannesburg, Nairobi.

By road

Travelers can also travel by road from Lusaka for a distance of 470 kms for a period of 6–7 hours following the T1 Great North Road south through Choma to Livingstone. The road is paved and suitable for most vehicles. You travel for 20–30 minutes depending on border procedures. Ensure you have the appropriate visa or use the KAZA Univisa if eligible.

By train

You can also travel from Lusaka to Livingstone by passenger train, although the journey is much longer than driving or flying. From the railway station in Livingstone, taxis can take you to the park in about 10–15 minutes.
