NOUABALE-NDOKI NATIONAL PARK

A unique, Pristine and amazing place on this planet. Established in 1993, north of Congo. It is found in the Democratic Republic of Congo. It occupies an area of  3,921.61 km2 (1,514.14 sq mi) and  it  is managed jointly by the WCS Congo and  the Ministry of Forestry. You can get to the park by road or air, there are nearby airstrips like Makao-Lingango and Kabo . Book with your domestic charter flight providers.

When to Visit

You can visit this park all year through however it is advisable to visit in the dry season for easy view and access to the forest. Getting to the forest is a five mile flat hike plus a half an hour walk through thigh deep flooded forest. Remember to carry your water boots

HABITATS

A home to beautiful species, over 10 primates like western lowland gorillas ,the chimps, mammal elephants,buffaloes,sitatunga antelopes, Congo clawless and spotted necked otters,black and white colobus monkeys.

MBELI BAI CAMP

Enjoy the canoe trip on Ndoki river to get to this site located in the south west of the National park .This is the longest running field site and it is a natural  swampy forest .Owing to the fact that the western lowland gorillas are shy, having a glimpse at them can be a bit difficult. However, the researchers have put in place an eight meter high platform that provides you with a bird’s eye view of the gorillas.

MONDIKA GORILLA PROJECT

This is one of the sites with a fully habituated western lowland project. So far two groups have been habituated;

  • The Silver back Kingo was the first to be habituated in the early 2000’s.
  • The silver back Buka was habituated between 2008-2010
  • The third group is under way .

The habituation allows you smell,listen to the breathing size of the gorillas and their gaze is so impressive. The Mondika is also a home to other animals like the chimpanzees ,elephants and other primates.

 

THE GOUALOUGO APE  PROJECT

This lies between Ndoki and goualougo rivers on the southern boundary of the park blessed with extensice swamps.The chimpanzees here a very friendly ,and do not fear human interaction,they actually descend to the lower branches of the tressa to gain a better view of the visitors. The experience is thrilling having the chimps in your presence.

ELEPHANT LISTENING ACTIVITIES

These were started around 2016, since elephants communicate in low tones frequencies have been set up to monitor and capture their sounds and the moment is breath taking. Come spend a night and experience listening to the elephant traffic sounds under a full moon.

ACCOMODATION

The facilities are basic, so if you are in need of a comfortable and air conditioned trip, this isn’t for you. However, if you are an adventure lover come lure yourself to sleep with the sound of the rivers and wake up to the sound of the birds.

These include the Mondika Camp,Ndoki and Mbeli Camp.
