Golden Monkey Tracking in Uganda & Rwanda – Primate Safaris.

The golden monkey is only found in Rwanda & Uganda. Primate Safaris has been tailoring golden monkey tracking & Habituation experience in Volcanoes national park & Mgahinga National Park.  It is found in Mgahinga Gorilla National park which is part of the Virunga Mountains where it is endemic. Compared with other monkey species, the golden monkeys are gorgeous in appearance. The Golden Monkey is very rare and elusive they have bright colored fur with long golden hair mixed with orange.

They have attractive outstanding color, close to gold, hence the name. They are very playful and move quite fast, so if you want to take pictures you need to make sure you are steady and fast. Most of them are used to humans so they will not run away if they see people.

They live in troops of about 100 lead by an Alpha male and mostly feed on bamboo shoots, a variety of seasonal fruits, bamboo leaves, lichens, sprouts, flowers, leaves and small invertebrates.

Tracking the golden monkey in Uganda can be quite interesting and adventurous. Golden monkey tracking can either be done in Uganda, or in Rwanda. Golden monkey tracking is not as exhausting as gorilla tracking because the monkeys do not build new nests every day so there is no need for pre-trackers to trace them every morning.

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in western Uganda is the perfect place to go tracking golden monkeys. The bamboo forests of Mgahinga provide a much-appreciated habitat for these endangered creatures. Tracking golden monkeys is not as popular as tracking gorillas but it is exciting all the same.

Golden monkey trekking is an active tour compared to Chimpanzee trekking and gorilla trekking in certain instances because it is done in the mountainous area and they are continuously moving which requires you to follow them. Golden monkeys are small and fast which makes tracking them an active and rewarding experience. Golden monkeys mainly prefer to rummage through the bamboo sections of the forest because they enjoy eating the young bamboo shoots.
