About the Park

Moreover, Okavango Delta is one of the world's extraordinary natural ecosystems and Botswana's premier wildlife destination to explore. Additionally, the Okavango Delta is an inland delta whose waters spread across Kalahari Desert and disappear through evaporation and seepage.

The delta covers between 6,000 and 15,000 square kilometers depending on seasonal flooding. It is a mosaic of permanent wetlands, seasonal floodplains, papyrus-lined channels, islands, lagoons and woodlands.

The Okavango Delta is located in northwestern Botswana. It occupies much of the Kalahari Basin, between Maun to the south and Namibia's Caprivi Strip to the north.

Okavango River forms the delta, originating in the highlands of central Angola. After flowing through Angola and briefly forming part of the border with Namibia, the river enters Botswana, where it spreads into an intricate network of waterways instead of flowing to the ocean.

The delta consists of Permanent rivers and channels, Seasonal floodplains, Freshwater lagoons, Palm-covered islands, Swamps, Papyrus and reed beds, Grasslands, Mopane and acacia woodlands. This remarkable landscape changes continuously as floodwaters rise and recede each year.
