The lodge comprises of the extraordinary elephant tradition which has become one of Mfuwe Lodge's defining characteristics famous for photography of elephants walking through a building.

It is a well-established safari property offering excellent access to one of Zambia's most celebrated wildlife areas with comfortable accommodation, strong guiding, walking safaris, day and night game drives, a swimming pool, spa and photographic facilities.

For travelers seeking a combination of classic African safari atmosphere, abundant wildlife and comfortable lodge living, Mfuwe lodge is one of the most distinctive places to stay in South Luangwa.

Mfuwe Lodge is situated within South Luangwa National Park in Zambia's Eastern Province. The lodge is built around two natural lagoons beneath a canopy of mature trees. One side borders an oxbow lagoon, while a permanent hippo pool providing another important source of water and wildlife activity.

Rather than having to travel far before encountering wildlife, guests are surrounded by an ecosystem that naturally attracts animals. Water is one of the most important resources in the Luangwa Valley particularly during the dry season and the lagoons around Mfuwe can become magnets for elephants, hippos, crocodiles, antelope and birds.

The result is that wildlife viewing does not necessarily stop when the game drive ends.

Guests can sit on their private deck, relax beside the swimming pool or enjoy a meal facing the lagoon while watching the bush come alive around them.

The Famous Elephants of Mfuwe Lodge

The most extraordinary feature associated with Mfuwe Lodge is its annual elephant migration through the lodge grounds. There is a wild mango tree growing in the lodge's courtyard. When the mangoes ripen, elephants regularly come to feed on the fruit. Their traditional route takes them directly through the lodge's reception area.

The movement happens in the months of October, November and December when fruits ripen. Rather than blocking the animals, the lodge accommodates their passage hence making this an exceptional encounter

This has become one of Africa's most memorable wildlife encounters as Guests usually find themselves watching elephants calmly walk through the open-air reception before continuing toward the mango tree.

The Lodge makes South Luangwa National Park very unique to encounter as wildlife animals are not always confined to a designated viewing area.

he thatched architecture helps the lodge blend into the surrounding environment, while the interiors combine contemporary furnishings with traditional safari influences. Each chalet includes Air conditioning, En-suite bathrooms, Showers, Comfortable beds, Mosquito protection, Private outdoor viewing deck, Views toward the surrounding wildlife habitat.

The private decks are particularly valuable because they create a personal wildlife-viewing space. Instead of sharing every sighting with other guests, visitors can spend time quietly observing the lagoon and surrounding woodland from their own accommodation.

For a family or small group travelling together, the Director's House can offer considerably more privacy than separate rooms.

The Main Lodge

The central lodge is designed around open-plan communal areas. It includes a reception area, lounge area, dining area, fully stocked bar as well as a social centre where guests can meet between safari activities.

The architecture is intentionally open, allowing the surrounding environment to remain visible and audible.

A large deck extends over the lagoon, creating an excellent area for dining, relaxation and wildlife watching. The lodge was refurbished in recent years, with improvements to the main living areas, bar and deck while retaining its relaxed safari character.
