About the Lodge
Virunga Lodge is widely considered one of the most iconic properties in East Africa set high on a ridge with a majestic three hundred and sixty degree panoramic view of the Virunga Volcanoes and the twin lakes as well as the stunning Volcanoes National Park.
The lodge has ten stone cottages known as Bandas which are styled with vibrant organic colours and traditional craftsmanship. Each Banda offers a spacious private veranda and is furnished with either a large deluxe king size bed or double twin configurations suitable for luxury travelers.
The rates for Virunga Lodge are usually structured around multi-day safari packages though individual night rates average between 1200 USD and 1800 USD per person sharing depending on the season of the year.
These rates include all meals drinks laundry services and specific local activities like the Lake Bulera village walk or a traditional Intore dance performance.
Because it is dramatically perched on a high ridge the distance from Virunga Lodge to the Kinigi park headquarters is slightly longer than the valley properties requiring a forty-five-minute drive each morning to reach the gorilla trekking briefing station.
However, this elevated location means that the lodge is situated just a ten-minute drive from the tranquil waters of Lake Bulera and Lake Ruhondo which allows for immediate boat trips.
The drive to the starting point of the Mount Gahinga volcano climb is about fifty minutes from the lodge while the entrance to the Musanze caves can be reached in approximately thirty-five minutes by vehicle.
