Where to go

Top locations

Rwanda's national parks are intimate, immersive, and utterly unlike anywhere else on the continent. This is not a country of vast, endless game plains it is something altogether more personal. In Volcanoes National Park, you trek through bamboo forest and ancient lava fields to sit quietly in the presence of mountain gorillas, an encounter so moving it has reduced grown adults to tears. In Nyungwe Forest, one of Africa's last great montane rainforests, chimpanzees call through a canopy so dense and primeval it feels like stepping back to the very beginning of the world. And in Akagera National Park  Rwanda's only savanna reserve  the Big Five roam free across open plains and papyrus-fringed lakes in a wildlife comeback story that has become one of conservation's greatest modern successes. Small in number but extraordinary in depth, Rwanda's parks reward those who come not just to see Africa, but to truly feel it.

Seasons & timing

When to go

Rwanda's geography gives it a climate that, while equatorial, is tempered by altitude making it one of the most consistently comfortable destinations in East Africa year-round. The high elevations of the Virunga volcanoes and Nyungwe Forest mean cool, fresh air even at the equator, and while rain is always a possibility in the forests, it rarely lasts long enough to derail a day's adventure. The best time to visit largely depends on what you are coming for  gorilla trekking is possible in every month of the year, but trail conditions, visibility, and overall comfort vary with the seasons. Whenever you choose to come, Rwanda will have something extraordinary waiting for you.
